Ashley Monticello Author Bio
My name is Ashley Monticello and I am an art education major at The College of New Jersey. I have been living in Monroe Township, New Jersey in the same house since the day I was born. I graduated from Monroe Township High School in June of 2011. Through out my life I have been in love with art, cartoons and popular culture. I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil and I hope my art can one day bring me to an occupation in Disney or Marvel Comics. I have a huge fascination with superheroes and fantasy and have been to Walt Disney World for sixteen summers of my life so far. I spend my free time working on my digital art and baking cupcakes. I also teach gymnastics in Freehold to kids of all ages. I love teaching kids and have them go home with new knowledge, especially if their helpful knowledge stays with them because of me.
I am absolutely in love with all of Shepard Fairey’s works. I enjoy his bold start of a street artist running from the law, trying to promote his ideas and stress the freedom of speech, expression and the press. His idea of reaching out to the public and getting out his ideas of our current government is really successful for me because when I look at his work, I take a second look at our government as well as my personal views. I think Shepard Fairey’s art is great for people who really don’t think about the government or politics in general. I knew nothing about out government until I started getting into Obey and Shepard Fairey’s artwork. He has opened my eyes to my importance of being aware of the government and its impact on my life. It was not until this year where I actually began to get interested in presidential debates and the news on each candidate and what they are trying to do or change. Shepard Fairey is a great modern artist for kids to learn from. It can help kids get involved with government at an earlier age so they can be better and more involved Americans. On another note, the fact that Shepard Fairey branched out into the clothing business is amazing because he gets to share his work and educate the masses on his ideas on government and challenge the consumer. I love that Shepard Fairey’s work is functional rather than just a pretty piece of work to look at. Shepard Fairey’s work isn’t just amazing handmade art pieces, it serves as a functional purpose to people of all ages in the current world.
